The champagne has been popped, the ring selfies have been posted, and you are officially engaged! It is one of the most exciting moments of your life. But if you’re like most couples, about 48 hours after the proposal, a tiny wave of panic sets in.
What are we actually supposed to do now?
Before you fall down a Pinterest rabbit hole or start blindly emailing venues, you need a solid foundation. We handle the logistics so you aren't overwhelmed by tasks. Here is the exact, stress-free order of operations we recommend to our couples at The Wedding Haven.
Phase 1: The "Dreaming" Stage Grab a coffee (or a cocktail), sit down with your partner, and tackle these broad strokes first:
The "Brain-Dump" Guest List: Write down absolutely everyone you would love to celebrate with. Don't worry about cutting people just yet - just get the names on paper.
Tier Your List: Now, group those names. Tier 1 (The absolute essentials), Tier 2 (The possibles), and Tier 3 (The nice-to-haves/last-minute invites).
Pick a Season: You don't need a date yet, but deciding between a cozy winter vibe or a warm summer evening will instantly narrow down your venue search.
Define Your Non-Negotiables: Make a list of your "must-haves" (e.g., a live band, an open bar) and your "nice-to-haves" (e.g., a photo booth). When you get into the weeds of planning later, this list will be your anchor.
The Budget Chat: You don't need a perfectly itemized spreadsheet yet, but you do need to find your "comfort zone" number based on your savings and any family contributions. If you truly have no clue what weddings cost in your area, that is completely okay! It's alright to define a loose baseline now and adjust it once you do a little more research. Just don't skip this chat entirely - touring venues without a ballpark number is a recipe for heartbreak.
Consider Your Support System: Be honest about your schedule. Do you have the bandwidth to plan this alone, or should you start looking into a wedding planner's level of involvement?
Phase 2: Making It Real Once Phase 1 is done, you are ready to make the big moves! Now is the time to start:
Interviewing Planners: If you decided in Phase 1 that you want professional support, hire your planner first. We can help you navigate tricky venue contracts and spot hidden fees before you sign anything.
Venue Research & Touring: Start visiting venues with your budget and "non-negotiables" list in hand to see what spaces actually fit your vibe.
Locking in Your Date: Remember, you do not officially have a wedding date until your venue contract is signed and the deposit is paid! This is the ultimate anchor for the rest of your planning.
Booking Priority Vendors: The minute your date and venue are locked, immediately start reaching out to high-demand vendors who usually only take one wedding a day (like Photographers, Caterers, and your Band/DJ).

🌿 The Wedding Haven Sanity Check
Do not try to do Phase 1 and Phase 2 in the same weekend! The engagement is a distinct season of life to be enjoyed, not just a to-do list before the wedding. Take at least a week or two just to be engaged and celebrate before you make a single spreadsheet.
